"From this meeting I have learned great deals about pilot’s responsibilities. Pilots responsibilities are safety of passengers and crew members, seek excellence in airmanship, maintain situational awareness, act with responsibility and courtesy and adhere to applicable laws and regulations. However, from all these responsibilities, safety comes first. From the time the plane is airborne until those three landing gears are back on the runway the work never stops. The Pilot is constantly scanning flight instruments and engine monitoring systems and the surrounding airspace for other airplanes that might pose a risk. Pilot responsibilities vary over a wide spectrum, because there are so many types of piloting situations.
An unpaid private pilot flying alone in a single-engine airplane has a responsibility to comply with all applicable laws and regulations and to operate the aircraft in a sensible manner that takes into consideration the safety of the public. From that, adding a passenger or passengers, expands pilot’s responsibilities even more to cover the safety and comfort of the passengers. If you reach the level of flying for an airline or Cargo Company or a major corporate or charter operation, the responsibilities again expand, to include contractual and moral obligations to the company. The pilot must represent the company in a diplomatic and positive light, as well as follow all company policy and also applicable law and regulations.
Pilots should be able to recognize all the threats and how to manage those threats. Threats can be divided into two categories; operational threats and environmental threats. Operational threats are aircraft malfunction, ground problems and poor procedures. Environmental threats may consist of weather and ATC and anything that are outside the pilot’s direct control. If the pilot does not recognize these threats, this could lead to errors. Errors can be aircraft handling, such as, poor control of automation, incorrect flap setting and wrong taxi routes. Also, procedural errors like improper checklist usage and weight & balance mistake. Threats come to the pilots; however, errors come from the pilots. So it is important to recognize the threats and react to it as soon as possible, before it leads to errors."
